I liked the way this book was written more than what it was about. There are basically two stories that both revolve around the main character. One story (every odd chapter)) reverse chronology and deals with the character’s past. The other story (every even chapter) deals with the current plot. Both stories play off each other in regards to theme and tone. Parts of it were a little confusing though, because I didn’t realize the story-telling method until about halfway in.

As far as The Culture novels go, this isn’t my favorite. I feel like it was too focused on the main character. Not enough minds or drones for my taste.
