Preying or praying?

I tend to find a lot of interesting stuff in my backyard. I’ve seen tons of manatees. They tend to like coming to the inner waterways during the winter, I think the water is warmer further inland. I’ve seen a few alligators, lots of squirrels, and a bobcat too. Then there’s this guy.

Preying Mantis

He was on my porch, so I brought him back outside and took some pictures. There are a billion different species of mantis, so I have no idea which one this is. They’re called “praying mantises” colloquially, but “praying” tends to get misspelled as “preying” since they’re predatory. I thought that was funny.

Kayak adventure morning

My face was literally two inches from a hive of sleeping wasps on a branch in the middle of the river. Also, the current was super strong because of all the rain we’ve been getting.

Corkscrew I

Swamp river

Kayaking eastward on the canal in my backyard with some friends. My favorite part of that ride is going under the telephone cables. They tend to buzz pretty loudly and it’s quiet enough to hear them if the wind isn’t blowing too hard. It reminds me of Lain. Next time I go out on there I’m going to go west. It’s more populated in that direction as the canal widens, which hopefully means less spiders.
